Lawrence Lucia Is Doing Well Reply to this Post

Some of you may know Lawrence in and around the Vintage circles. For years he raced vintage bikes, and still does on occasion. He's also had a staph infection in his ankle from an injury for more than 10 years, and every remedy has been tried with no results.

He has considered amputation, but never went through with it. Just recently, he got out of bed, took a step, and broke his leg above the ankle. The infection had eaten away at the bone, so there was no choice but to amputate.

It's been a couple of weeks now, and he feels 100% better and not run down. He's home now and getting ready for a prosthetic so he can tend to his farm and get ready for some riding.

Anyone that knows him, knows he's tougher than a $2.00 steak.

Lawrence is my hero! What an inspiration to "NEVER QUIT". In fact, a documentary on vintage dudes needs to be made with that very title, and with Lawrence as the primary character. An ESPN 30 for 30 classic film.

Heal well Lawrence, and hope to see you at the races soon. I know it's against your nature not to race, but maybe come watch a few with your "extended family" first!

Re: Lawrence Lucia Is Doing Well Reply to this Post

I talked to Lawrence today, and he's home a feeling much better. He's riding around on a 4-wheeler keeping an eye on the farm and animals. The docs want it to heel for a few months, then they will fit him for a prosthetic.

If he didn't already have it tough enough, he told me that while he was going from the hospital, then over to therapy, his wife was pushing him in a wheelchair in the rain, slipped, and broke her kneecap. He also had a heart attack while he was in therapy, which he is ok for now, but will have to address that at a later date.

He's in good spirits though, he said he can only laugh about it all. I have to remember not to whine about my little aches and bumps.

I'll find out tomorrow, but I think early 70's.

I am saddened by this news about Mr. Lucia. He and Bertus are CZ icons. If you read this, Lawrence, you are an inspiration.

Re: Lawrence Lucia Is Doing Well Reply to this Post

I just met Mr. Lawrence at the first race at Donie this year, quite the man and still rides well. My hat is also off to Click and Skip, wish I could just stay in their dust. Pray for a timely recovery for Mr. Lawrence, Click and Chance. As for as Putkey, just try to stay out the way of the back runners and stay on two wheels. And as Click says, CHEERS.
