Anyone familiar with Motorcycles Unlimited in Cypress? Reply to this Post

I'm having a 79 YZ125 shipped to me; scheduled to arrive mid-Feb or by the third week. I want to have it ready for Donie March 10th, but will need to rebuild the rear shock first.

Sending it to Race Tech in Corona, CA will be cutting it close, so I'm considering letting Motorcycles Unlimited do it, since they are a Race Tech trained shop. Thoughts?

I talked to RT in Corona today and they said that they'd have to ship the parts to Cypress anyway, so it may not even save much time? Wondering if anyone has had a shock rebuilt with them locally.

The 79 suspension is no where in comparison to the late model bikes.
You may consider RaceTech as they know their stuff definitely.

I have personally worked with RaceTech for years and years. Their internal components are always on my suspension..

Joe, I would let RaceTech handle it, even if it's cutting close for Donie, get it done right the first time. Here's what I would try to do. Ask the owner of the bike if he will remove the shock and ship it directly to racetech for you. Throw an extra buck in there for his trouble. After that, Instruct him to use a section of PVC pipe or even a closet dowel, to emulate the shock as installed. Drill holes on each end, insert up the backbone, slip the bolts through and your done. All you are doing is supporting the bike "as rigid" while it's in transit. You could save a lot of "shipping time" dealing with parts, service time by doing this.

As far as racetech is concerned, I deal with the vintage guru Matthew Wiley. Talk to him exclusively, tell him your dilema and maybe he can put you to the front of the line. He shows up at Diamond Don's every year for race support. Very nice guy. Let him know that when he comes in, you'll buy him a steak dinner for his trouble. It worked for me one year at Diamonds. Good luck my friend!

Call me if you have anymore issues. 713-417-5310

I went there for RaceTech parts years ago and found them to be a street bike shop without any RaceTech inventory. They may be RaceTech Trained, but I bet a paycheck that they've never seen a 79 Monoshock. They do not even stock 8mm shims for modern MX forks.
I wonder if Jay Huffman could do it? Then you save the return shipping time and $: Show up, put it back in, and race.
Good luck.

Jay did my '79 back in the days and did an awesome job on both shock and forks. Gained travel on both ends.

Wow, sorry guys; I let myself get busy with other things and forgot to even check back in on this thread! Thanks to everyone for some great feedback.

I've got a couple of things in the works. I've talked to Race Tech and NorCal (since I love what they did for my YZ250). The bike will be picked up this weekend and the owner has indeed agreed to ship the shock wherever it needs to go if that's the route I take. Some last minute phone calls tomorrow may decide everything.

Didn't know that Jay could possibly do this; that's one of a couple phone calls for tomorrow; thanks Putter and humyam.

Took longer than expected to get the bike, then several days of PB Blaster, heat, and aggravation to get the swingarm/shock pin removed to take off the shock!

Anyhoo, long story short, Jay Huffman is rebuilding my shock as we speak, and I found a spring from a 79 250. I'll see how it feels and then decide whether or not to add a reservoir for some possible fine tuning.

Rick, looks like we may have very similar bikes in our camps. I now have the '79 125 and 250, and my best buddy and travel partner for ahrma this year will race his 84 125.
