So I Rode A 2015 Yamaha 250F Reply to this Post

I've never owned a Yamaha, but have ridden a couple of them (125 & 450) over the years. Me and Jason Peirce went riding this weekend at Murphy's Mx in Red Rock. He has a 17 350 like mine, but he also brought along his 2015 Yamaha 250F. He wanted me to take it for a ride and see what I thought about it. The first thing I noticed was - 0 power, notta, zilch. I thought to myself, I'm going to look like a nit-wit on this gutless wonder. Well, after a lap or so, I figured out I was going to have to rev this thing like Bam Bam. So I begin to hold the throttle on even going into the corners with the clutch in. Once I got it figured out, and kept it rpm's up, it's actually a very fast bike, especially on Murphy's heavy, deep night track.

The low power was not really the point of this thread, that was just a noted preface. The main reason for posting about the Yamaha, was its cornering ability. My KTM's are great bikes, but when I go into a corner without a rut, and the back tire gets a good bite, the front tire wants to push or slide out, and I have to ease off the throttle a bit. I generally have to get the back tire to start stepping out and steer with the throttle. If there is a rut, not problem, they corner well.

But the Yamaha 250f was a dream to corner. Out in the flat no mans land, it would take all the throttle I could give it, and the front was stable and predictable. One thing I did notice when I first got on the track, was it seem to want to wander/twitch just easing along getting used to it. Once up to speed and putting demands on steering input, it turned effortlessly. The bike is stock with stock suspension, and he has only tweaked what is there. All my KTM's suspensions are stock, and there is always room for improvement on suspension adjustments and body position, but that Yamaha 250F got my attention.

KTM corners as good or better than the Yamaha. Time to work on bike set up Monty.

Anyone have a clue what a 2012 YZ250F would be worth?
I have one that I am selling for a friend. I have no clue what to ask for it. Low hour, very nice bike. Has original chain and sprockets with plenty of life left. Wasn't ridden much, used on the trails mostly.

Monty,

Must be something wrong with your buddies YZ250F because this new generation backwards motor is widely recognized to be one of the strongest in the class. Now if this is your first time aboard a 250F that would explain your disappointment...they are NOT 2-stroke powerful though they can be ridden just as fast once your figure it out.

Just my 2 cents :)

If you like the way a Yamaha turns you better not ride a Suzuki or there will be a yellow bike in your garage.

Murray, me and the bike are in need of tweaking. I would like to push the forks higher into the clamps, but I scared of the rare high speed tank slapper. I also ashamed to say I'm not sure of my seat sag setting. My clickers; well, there somewhere in the middle........I think.

Hey Pino, I was being a little dramatic about it being a gutless wonder, it was just a noticeable difference from my 350.

Monty,

Just drop your forks 5mm & that should help.

Also make sure that you have about 102-105mm rear sag.

Clickers needs to be played with to find what work for your riding style & the track conditions.

If you need help let me know & we can meet at Rio.

Thanks Howard, I'm usually so excited to get to a track and ride, I usually don't check settings or make adjustments.

I'm going to take the time and see where things are set. The 350 is light and a bullet, and turns pretty good, but like me, it needs correction.
